Toyota Motor Corporation confirmed in Tokyo Thursday that it is, indeed developing a 2012 sports coupe -- a new-age Celica -- in a joint effort with Subaru. The sports car will be on a new rear-wheel-drive platform, with a Subaru boxer engine under its hood. The boxer four easily adapts to a RWD configuration. Both Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries -- Subaru -- will begin selling the sports car by the end of 2011. A 2005 Toyota Celica GT-S is pictured.
As part of the deal, Toyota will provide Subaru with a compact car in late 2010, a year before the sports car arrives.
Here's Toyota's description of the sports car: "The compact rear-wheel (sic) sports car to be jointly developed by TMC and FHI is envisioned to offer a new 'fun to drive' experience based on an all-new vehicle platform powered by an FHI core-technology horizontally-opposed engine. Market introduction is targeted for the end of 2011. Production is to take place at a new plant to be built at FHI's Gunma Manufacturing Division in Japan's Gunma Prefecture. TMC will consign production to FHI."
The Toyota-provided Subaru compact would have a conventional inline four-cylinder Toyota engine. I'm guessing it would be a Yaris-size car or perhaps even smaller, slotted below the Subaru Impreza. It may not be intended for U.S. import. And Diahatsu, Toyota's Japanese Domestic Market minicar division, will supply Subaru with a rebadged version of its Coo compact for the JDM beginning this October. By the second half of 2009, Diahatsu will supply Subaru with minicars for the JDM. This is big news in the JDM, as Subaru already builds its own 660-cc minicars there.

Tātad tas ir noticis, redzēsim kas sanāks
